As I hinted in an image caption of a post last week, I did a Lord of the Rings marathon this weekend. I had nothing else to do, so I watched all three of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies. I haven’t done this in ages, and I highly enjoyed being a vegetable for an entire day. Here are some thoughts and highlights about the experience.
Also, if you somehow haven’t seen the movies yet, potential spoilers ahead. Continue reading →
Confession time: I used to drink a lot of pop, or soft drinks, or soda, or whatever the current term is. My favourite drink was Pepsi, but I had them all. On very hot days 7-Up slid down my throat; if I were feeling laid back, I’d have a Mug root beer; when I wanted to tempt diabetes, I’d have a Crush cream soda. Basically, if it was carbonated and filled with sugar, I drank it.
I remember, one time the only pop available was a Diet Coke. I avoid aspartame like the plague, but I was so desperate for a drink that I opened it. It tasted terrible, nothing like regular Coke. I hated it … and I drank it anyway. I drank the whole can.
I have another anecdote that is even worse. In 1999, Star Wars Episode I premiered in theatres. At the time, Pepsi put out promotional cans featuring various Star Wars characters. Now, to get them all, you had to drink all kinds of Pepsi products, such as Diet Pepsi and Mountain Dew. I repeatedly bought Diet Pepsi to get those exclusive characters … and I don’t even like Star Wars. I never watched the movie. I drank pop that I didn’t like for a movie I didn’t watch. This is insane.
I had a collection like this, but I threw them out when I moved to university. Turns out collecting cans for a movie you don’t like isn’t a good idea.
