Today is July 1st, a very special day. Most importantly, it’s Canada Day, a national holiday. That’s always nice. Of secondary importance, it’s the beginning of the NHL free agency period, one of the busiest days in terms of player movement. There may be no better day for a Canadian hockey fan than July 1.
More than that, though, today is the beginning of July, the seventh month. The year is officially half over. Six months have gone, six months remain. It seems like just yesterday we were welcoming in 2016, and now it’s half over and soon it will be done. That’s … quite sobering, really.
Most people have long since abandoned their new year’s resolutions, but not me. I’m constantly thinking about how I can improve, where I need to improve and what I need to do to get there. I set some pretty lofty goals back at the beginning of the year, and now is the perfect time to make sure I’m still trending in the right direction or if I need to change something. January and gyms seem to go hand-in-hand. Certainly its the gym owner’s favourite month. After all, something like 80% of people who sign up stop going within two weeks, and that number gets even bigger if we look into February. Indeed, gym’s have become somewhat notorious for this, as they advertise heavily at this time of year, using fitness models with amazing bodies, all to entice everyone with a New Year’s resolution to walk in and sign a contract.
It’s almost sickening, isn’t it? People want to make themselves better, healthier, happier. So many people have dreams for the New Year, hoping that this the year everything changes for the better. Gyms prey on these people, essentially taking their money for nothing. They know most people will give up within a few weeks, so they get paid for months while giving almost nothing. It’s a calculated strategy, and frankly the whole fitness industry should be ashamed of itself.
There’s a very good chance this fitness model never touched a bowflex before that photo shoot.
This year, I figured I’d change that. Since I easily handled three goals last year, I’ll set more this year. Indeed, I’ll go into greater detail, completely outlining my expectations and my plan of attack. At this time next year, there will be no mystery about whether I achieved or failed these goals. I also think writing them down in detail is both more motivating and lets me plan it out better, as opposed to just “let’s hope and pray it works.”
Having a birthday in late March gives me a unique advantage. Many people set New Year’s resolutions and promptly abandon them. I try to stay true until my birthday, which is a full quarter of the calendar year. I can then see what has been working, what hasn’t and what needs tweaking. Every January 1st, people the world over make resolutions. Lose weight, get in shape, give up a bad habit, the list goes on. Unfortunately, though these intentions are noble, they frequently falter by January 2nd. You need willpower if you hope to stick to one of these.
You can help your willpower. Telling friends and family can help, as it will create a support network when your motivation wanes. I am going one step further: I am telling everyone.
In short, I created a website to track my progress. I bought a domain and a hosting plan. I put money down on a one-year plan, so I have no choice but to be committed. If I get any visitors, they can push me and cheer me on as well.
I’m very new to all this. Creating a website isn’t as easy as I thought, but once I get things figured out, all my hopes, thoughts and dreams for 2015 will be on here, somewhere. Here’s hoping it’s a great year.
